IRIDESCENT HANDMADE NECKLACE Each seashell necklace begins with pāua gathered by hand from the cold coastal waters of New Zealand, where the species is carefully protected. The shells in our Pāua Shell Collection were chosen 15 to 20 years ago for their natural play of color and have never been altered. They are not dyed, color-enhanced, laminated, veneered, or resin-coated.
As pāua grows, it forms its shell in exceptionally thin, mineral-rich layers. When light enters the shell and reflects between these layers, it produces the luminous iridescence pāua is known for. The color depends on both the thickness of the layers and the angle of the light. No two are ever alike.
The necklace chains paired with this pendant are plated in the USA with .999 pure silver on brass. Our chains will have either elegant hooks or lobster clasps and are available in 16", 18", or 20" lengths. Because each pāua shell is one of a kind, the chain you receive will be assorted, with its thickness thoughtfully selected to complement the individual shape and character of your shell.
